Travel Softball League – Frequently Asked Questions

What is travel softball?

Travel softball is a more competitive level of play that typically involves tryouts, weekend tournaments, and a greater time commitment than recreational softball. Teams may travel locally or regionally depending on the season and division.

Who is eligible to try out?

Players must meet the age requirements for the division and demonstrate strong softball skills, good sportsmanship, and a commitment to team participation. Tryouts are open to all players—experience in recreational or travel softball is helpful but not required.

How are teams selected?

Players are evaluated by coaches and league staff during tryouts. Selections are based on skill level, attitude, coachability, and team needs. Team rosters are usually limited to ensure meaningful playing time for each athlete.

What is the time commitment?

Travel teams typically practice 2–3 times per week and participate in weekend tournaments, which may include both Saturday and Sunday games. Some teams may travel overnight depending on the tournament schedule.

How long is the travel season?

Our Fall Travel season generally runs from late August through early November. The Spring/Summer season begins in February and can extend into July depending on tournament schedules and qualifications.

How much does it cost?

Fees vary by team and season. League fees are due at the beginning of each season and cover fields and insurance. Individual team costs typically cover uniforms and tournaments. Additional travel and hotel expenses are the responsibility of each family.

Do travel players still play in the rec league?

In most cases, travel players do not participate in the recreational league during the same season. This allows them to focus on their travel team commitments. However, players are welcome to return to rec in future seasons.

What equipment is required?

Players must provide their own glove, cleats, and bat. Helmets and bags are usually ordered with uniforms. Catchers must provide their own gear or request team-issued equipment if available.

How much playing time does each player get?

There is NO guaranteed minimum play time in Travel. This means that you should not expect every player to play in every game. The general practice is that all players should get relatively equal playing time and the opportunity to play some different positions during the pool play games on Saturdays. On Sunday the line-ups may be more selective than in pool play, but the goal is to involve each player as much as possible. All playing time decisions will be made by the Head Coach.
